Looking for More Job Openings?

Job Search Market Update: I would like to say that things have changed this week to the point that there is suddenly an incredible amount of true permanent job openings, but alas I can not say that. Finding a job is still a challenge and best conquered by those that are tough at heart, persistent and tenacious.

Consumers account for 70% of the American economic activity. If they don't have the money, they will not purchase. In the past the consumer has carried us through the previous recessions. They still are not rising up to help this recession the way everyone would like them to. Our houses are no longer the ATM machines we could count on to artificially increase our non existent purchasing power.

Three things saving the economy from being worse are 1)75% of the infamous stimulus package has been spent (if you personally beneifited PLEASE comment. I have yet to meet anyone that has) 2) we are lucky to have near-zero interest rates and 3) anyone that was able to repalce their old car or appliance has been able to help the economy.

Job Search Tips: While the private sector's hiring has been disappointing due to lack of confidence, there is one bright are of hiring in the private sector, there are job opportunities in IT.

Job Market Improving, Unemployed re-enter Job Search Mode

Job Search Market Update: April was the 4th month in a row that the economy added workers, 573,000 jobs added in the first 4 months of this year! There are still more than 15.3 million unemployed last month. In April 290,000 jobs were added; 231,000 of the jobs added were by private employers and 66,000 were temporary jobs for the 2010 Census by the federal government. Employment increased in the professional and business sectors, leisure and hospitality and the manufacturing industry. The Labor Department has issued numbers that tell us 45.9% of all the unemployed people have been without a job for 27 weeks (9 months) or more. This unfortunately is a record high since they started keeping their records.

Job Search Tip: Research and look into job opportunities in leisure, hospitality, manufacturing industries. Look into companies that have seasonal products, services or needs that will become strong in the summer months starting now through fall. There may even be some seasonal jobs that could be temporary now but lead to full time employment once you have the ability to show them what a great employee you are!

Job Search Action Item: Sign up for our next audio Tele Class, Monday May 10, 2010, 9am-10am, CST, 7am-8am PST, "Interview Question Strategies and Tips 101". On this web site go to "Join our Mailing List" and check Registration/RSVP Tele Class May 10th.  Take a field trip to Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, and other outdoor seasonal operations in your area. Look for product and companies you get excited about. Monday go to the library and research those companies in depth. Make a goal of mailing your cover letter and resume to them on Tuesday.

Job Search Mental Health Tip: Take time off from your job search campaign and spend Mother's Day with your mother and some special people in your life. I lost my mother, Margery on June 20, 2007. I think to a certain degree I took Mother's Day for granted. Now on Mother's Day I really miss her. Luckily for me I have a wonderful daughter and son. Hug your own mother for me. You will be surprised how much positive energy you can get from a hug from someone that loves you unconditionally!

Consumer Confidence Increase to Help Job Outlook

Job Search Market Update: Consumers are becoming more optimistic this month, giving hopes that more jobs will become available.  More people may start to re-enter the labor force as the economy improves. This increase of people looking for jobs, will still keep the labor market fairly competitive on the job front. "Economists surveyed by Bloomberg earlier this month project the unemployment rate, at 9.7% in March, will end the year at 9.4%"

For the consumer product job seekers, note Whirlpool Corporation, the world's largest major appliance manufacturer, increased their forecast for the year based on the fact that their 1Q sales were 20% higher than the same time last year! A good sign guys.

Job Search Tip Update: Hiring is plentiful in the green-job market, specifically they are looking for sales, marketing and HR. If you land a salaried job, it will allow you to learn on the job and use your skills from other fields. Green-Job boards to check out are: GreenJobs.net, TreeHugger, GreenBiz.com, Green Collar Blog, GreenJobSearch.org  The top 5 cities for Green Jobs are NYC, San Francisco, Boston. Detroit and Portland Oregon. (See WSJ, 4.27.10, Green-Job Market by Mr. Finnigan)

Recovery in manufacturing segment is solid.

Job Market Update: Some feel that the recession ended in June 2009, though some experts are holding off from confirming what some of said relative to this issue.  As the job seekers find work, the median wage will continue to fall. More Americans will be working, but at salaries lower than what they consider adequate. People are happy to find and have jobs right now. Two years from now there will be a lot of people leaving the jobs that they are currently unhappy in.

Job Search Tip Update: Job market is improving in the construction and roofing area where solar panels are involved. Also continue to research the growth of jobs involved with the "green sector". Business that have goods our services that will save energy or be involved in recycling.

Job Search Action Item: Check out some job web sites involved with "Green" jobs.A couple to look into www.greenjobsearch.org, www.thegreenjobbank.com, www.jobs.greenbiz.com, and www.jobs.cleanedge.com

Job Search Mental Health: Field trip time. Visit your local Home Depot, Lowes, Ace or True Value store. Check out the spring/summer seasonal items that are being purchased by the home owners for their seasonal projects. This would include lawn and garden, paint, caulk, walkway lighting, etc. Contact those companies to see if they are hiring. Lastly buy your self 5 bags of mulch and put some of that in your yard. Now go inside and research those companies you found at the store that have the seasonal  products selling now.

That is a wrap.

Largest Job Gain in 3 years!

Happy post Easter Holiday!

Job Market Update: While we saw the largest job gain in 3 years, most of the economists do not expect the new hiring to increase quickly enough this year to rapidly reduce the unemployment rate. Patience is the key.

We saw additional jobs added with private employers (Most since May 2007), increases from manufacturers (3 months straight), increases from health care, leisure and hospitality segments.

Job Tip of the week: Go to your library and find a reference book that will give you 50 new companies with contact names, mailing address, phone, and fax. MAIL or FAX your resume to arrive Tuesday-Thursday. It will get notice more by being mailed, faxed and arriving on the suggested days.

Challenge/Action Item: Call 10 new people a day to follow up with or network on job lead ideas.

Job Search Mental Health Tip: Plant some pansy flowers somewhere outside with someone close to you.

Good luck with your job search progress this week!
