Six Figure Jobs Secrets to Success with Your Executive Job Search

What to Do When the Salary Is Lower Than What You're Seeking

If you find that an executive position you are interested in is too light in the salary department relative to your professional executive background and expertise but it's reasonably close, continue on with the interviewing process.

Yes, I suggest you go forward with the interview anyway, but with an ulterior motive in mind. During the end of the first interview, I would then suggest you bring up the possibility of adding additional duties or responsibilities that will warrant a higher pay scale. Make sure these add-ons will make the executive job more interesting to you and that both you and the hiring authority agree on them.

In addition, remember to confirm these details in your follow-up letters. This is a technique I have used in just about every executive search I've worked on. I like to up the executive job description ante so that the position is customized for both the executive candidate and the employer. In the case of working through a executive recruiter who does not use or understand this technique, you will need to be the one who handles the executive job-responsibility negotiations yourself. There's nothing shady about this technique.

In fact, by employing it, you'll creatively outmaneuver the other executive candidates for the position. In the end, they will end up being under-qualified for the upgraded final position, which you had a hand in redesigning. Once you've added on executive responsibilities, throughout the remainder of the interviews continue to confirm that the hiring authority still agrees with them. Also, remind them in your follow-up letters that you will satisfy all the needs for the executive position.

Be sure to offer to answer any concerns the hiring authority may have about you or your executive background relative to the executive position you are being considered for. The goal here is to chip away at the possibility of increasing your executive responsibility or authority above and beyond the original executive job description. On the basis of these added duties, the executive job has now, in essence, changed.

In turn, the executive salary should change as well. Now you've opened the door to possible upward executive salary negotiations. Congratulations!

I am also suggesting you constantly research various executive titles and compensations to understand what your current market value is. Use multiple sources to create a “realistic fair market value.” I look forward to helping you further with your executive job search.

Be Careful in Your Executive Job Search with Social Media

5 Tips for Your Job Search Using Facebook

Facebook was the second Social Media site I joined, and I like it. I have been using it more as a personal Social Networking site than a professional one, though. I think I started it that way to have another option. Plus, that was the way the site was originally positioned. I suggest you take a different approach and consider using Facebook for executive search business networking. If you've been using the site as a personal networking tool, you might need to change some of your privacy settings so you can transition your account while you're looking for a job.

Tips for Facebook:
1. Make sure you don't have any pictures posted that are not considered tasteful.

2. As with LinkedIn, make sure you have an executive professional looking picture, not the one in your Speedo in Hawaii.

3. Similar to LinkedIn, Facebook allows you to post status updates. This capability is a great help because it provides a way for you to keep everyone up to date on your executive job search. It also serves as a subtle reminder to your Social Network that you are still seeking executive employment.

4. If you post a "Note" on Facebook, it will last longer than a status update. It also affords you more space to elaborate.

5. Consider creating a "Celebrity, Band, or Business Page." When you first go to www.facebook.com, you will see that selection at the bottom of the login section. Click on that option and then follow the outlined steps. Set yourself up as a celebrity.

If you have trouble, call me and I will walk you through the process of setting up the page. That way, you can use your celebrity or business page for employers and not have to worry about co-mingling with your personal one.

First introduced in the 1940s by Rosser Reeves of Ted Bates and Company, the term unique selling proposition is today used in other fields. It is also tossed around casually to refer to any aspect of an object that differentiates it from similar objects.

In his book Reality in Advertising, Reeves laments that the USP is widely misunderstood.

He goes on to give a precise definition in three parts, as explained by Wikipedia:

1. Each advertisement must make a proposition to the consumer. It must not be just words, not just product puffery, not just show-window advertising. Each advertisement must say to every reader, "Buy this product, and you will get this specific benefit."

2. The proposition must be one that the competition either cannot or does not offer. It must be unique—either in the uniqueness of the brand or as a claim that is not otherwise made in that particular field of advertising.

3. The proposition must be so strong that it can move the mass millions (i.e., pull over new customers to your product).

Applying the Unique Selling Proposition method to your executive job search, your UPS should:

1. Tell the prospective employer, "Hire me and you will get this ____________ benefit for your organization."

2. Pinpoint what you feel is unique about you and what you can bring to the organization. Alternatively, it should highlight something unique that can bring value to the company that other candidates cannot or are unable to communicate that they can.

3. Showcase so strongly and compellingly the benefit and value you bring to the organization that the hiring authority is moved to hire you over all the other candidates they're considering. Basically your unique selling proposition should be kept to one sentence, two at the most. With your USP, you are stating how you are unique and different from all the other job candidates the hiring authority is considering.

When devising your proposition, ask yourself, "What is the most unique benefit or value I will bring to this organization?" Once finalized, your USP is a versatile marketing tool. You can use your unique selling proposition verbally, in cover letters, and on your executive resume.

It is here where you "hook" your executive job contacts' interest enough that they reach out to you and ask you for more information. This is precisely what you're trying to do any time you use your UPS, either verbally or in writing. You want the executive person you're communicating with to engage with or connect with you. That is when you become more of a real person and you start to build a relationship with them.

People hire executive people they like and who can solve a problem that is currently not being resolved within their organization. Simply put, companies hire executive people who will either save them money or make them money!

That being the case, you want your major benefit here to be expressed in a quantifiable way—in other words in dollars saved, increased (sales) revenue, time saved that translated into money saved, or a major problem you solved that translated to increased money for your past employer.

Make sure you're comfortable with saying your unique selling proposition out loud. You want it to sound natural, like you, not like a robot.

*** The above material is an excerpt from my newest executive job search book, The NEW Rules of Job Search – How to Land an Executive Job in the New Economy, Chapter 10, pages 153-54.

Research prior to your executive job search informational interview

Informational Meetings—Hidden Strengths

First, let's talk about what some people call the informational interview. Personally, I prefer the term informational meeting, but the two terms mean the same thing. I simply find the latter name lower key and more representative of what is actually trying to be accomplished. In my opinion, informational interview sounds a little more structured and even stressful than the type of meeting you want to take place with your executive job search.

An informational meeting is just like it sounds: one you arrange in order to collect information about an executive job, career field, industry, or company.

As previously discussed, as part of the personal networking portion of your executive job search campaign, you should be contacting 25 to 30 people daily. If you're doing that, realistically speaking, you will only be able to make 50 to 100 follow-up calls a week.

Plan for more calls than you think you will make, and you may just find yourself achieving a greater number of follow-ups than you thought you were capable of. Set the goal high and you'll soar higher than you initially believed! Remember the key is the sooner you get through your "no's" the sooner you will uncover your "yeses."

Relative to your target companies, you should be working on networking with your 25 to 50 (35) "A" companies on a daily basis. You should also plan to have 50 to 75 companies on your "B" companies list and 75 to 125 on you "C" list.

Because most executive job seekers will not use these techniques, this will give you an edge in uncovering the hidden jobs others are virtually ignoring. Leverage your target company lists to unearth the hidden executive jobs no one is going after!

At this point, you're probably asking, "If they need an executive job and are looking for a new one, why are most executive people not trying this strategy?" The answer is that the techniques I'm suggesting here are designed for the truly motivated and committed executive job seekers who want to win the executive job! They involve hard work and consistent effort on your part, something not everyone wants to put into their executive job search. That said, conducting an executive job search campaign in the hidden executive job market can, at times, prove more challenging.

One of the reasons it is more difficult is that you find yourself more on the front line, where the likelihood of being rejected is much higher. Prior to this economy, the typical rejection rate was 20-30% of every 100 letters sent out. In this current market, that number is more likely to be 40%-60%.

Now compare that to the typical success record, which can run about 2-4% depending on your situation, and the fear associated with the hidden executive job market is warranted.

But don't forget that the faster you get through the "no's" the faster you get to the homerun "yes." The name of the game is persistence.

At times, staying in the executive job search game may require a higher level of persistence than you're used to. Over time, the lack of seeing results may begin to wear on you. Don't let them beat you! The results you're seeking are just around the corner, so hang in there. As you continue to push forward, here are some points to ponder:

The next mile is the only one a person really has to make.

—Danish proverb

The rewards for those who persevere far exceed

the pain that must precede the victory.

—Ted Engstrom

LinkedIn - A Great Executive Job Search Tool

6 Tips on How to Use LinkedIn for Job Search Networking

You can use LinkedIn's search tools to find executives who are in your target companies. In the search bar, choose the "Companies" option and enter the name of the company you're interested in contacting. Under the industry section, pick "Any Industry" or the specific one you prefer. You will then be presented with a list of LinkedIn members who work for that company.

2. Go to the "Companies" tab and try this technique. Select "Browse All Industries" and select your industry. Look at every profile that interests you. When you have the profiles open, look at which "Groups and Associations" they have listed. This is another area to look for in your networking endeavors. If it makes sense, join the same group.

3. Consider joining Toplinked at www.toplinked.com. You should be able to link to its members. This group is made up of "open networkers" in LinkedIn who should be fairly amenable to accepting your invitation.

4. Make sure you are working on getting LinkedIn recommendations from your past supervisors, customers, peers, etc.

5. Don't forget to look at the "Applications" link on your LinkedIn home page. Check out which applications you would like to add to your account. 6. Consider adding the "Polls" function, which allows you to send a poll about your job search to your list. You will need to have 150 contacts in order to be able to use this product, but you will be able to reach everyone faster than by emailing or phoning them. There are various products out there that will coordinate and connect all your Social Networking sites for you. Linking them all together will save you time. That's because everything will be updated at the same time. Not only is it a competitive market out there, but it's also constantly changing technologically. That being the case, anything you can do to simplify the process is beneficial.

*** The above material is an excerpt from my newest executive job search book, The NEW Rules of Job Search – How to Land an Executive Job in the New Economy, Chapter 8, pages 133-34. Bottom line is to take action steps with your executive job search every day. Use these tips and get more comfortable with social media and LinkedIn.

I look forward to helping you land that next great executive job that you have been looking for during your executive job search!

Today I want to share some executive job search tips regarding stress that you should consider and try to implement in your daily life. According to the Midwest Center which helps people that are dealing with stress and anxiety in the day to day lives, you can easily diminish some of your stress by following their suggest method, “ABC”. You will find this idea of theirs can also be applied to help you during your job search. Follow this “ABC” method today, and see how it will help ease some of the stress in your life and job search for the day. Then remember to use this system everyday going forward.

1. Attitude: A positive attitude can help you convert bad stress to good stress. For example, instead of being stressed out about a particular task or situation, instead feel excited about the potential for new experiences. And try to surround yourself with similar positive thinkers!

2. Breathe: Calm down, by slowing down, starting with your breathing.

3. Choice: Choose to control what you can – and that’s rarely the words and actions of others. Make choices to do thing to the best of your ability and with an open heart, at home or on the job. Remember for those of you that believe in a higher authority, prayer is one of the key stress relievers. Your executive job search is like life, there are areas that you can have some control and impact, while a great majority of the executive job search is out of your control. Focus daily on the area of your job search that you can have impact, such as research 5 more companies, 5 more follow up calls, mailing 5 resumes, and networking with 5 new people you have not contacted before. I discovered some simple tips by the author Cheryl Richardson on the subject that I wanted to share with you today. Richardson suggests that in times of disappointments that you ask yourself the following four questions:

Which part of me is this loss supposed to strengthen?

Job Search question: How is this job search making me a better and stronger person in terms of my motivation, ambition and resolve to find that next great job?

2.What can I learn from this? Job Search question: What am I learning about myself and professionally while I am doing my job search that is leading me toward a better job search final decision?

3.Who can help me transform this loss into gain? Job Search question: Who can I be helping and networking with to help me become a better person and grow through this transition?

4.How can what I’ve learned help me help others? Job Search question: How can I share what I have learned and am learning in my job search with others, so they can benefit from what I have learned and save them time, and improve their job search?

In her book Body + Soul, she writes, “When we get to the other side of a letdown, there awaits a great opportunity to use what we’ve learned in service to ourselves and others.” Bear fruit with patient endurance. (Luke 8:15)

Have a great week!

Remember to find the positive side of what you are coping and going through. I always say to myself, “There has to be a reason, I am supposed to being going through this. There must be something that a Higher Power wants me to learn and become a better person helping others and making a difference in this world.” Blessings,
