Job Market Still Tight: "So What Do I Do Now?"

Job Search Market Update: The job market still continues to be tight as evidence by all the statistics such as unemployment, GDP, consumer confidence, etc. The good news is that it has to get better. I predict that we will continue to see a slow improvement going into the the fall. The labor market will continue to be conservative going into the first part of 2011.(Don't forget we have the holiday season to get through)

The momentum should start to pick up speed the early part of 2nd Quarter.(After all the experts analyse the holiday sell through)

The reason for all of this is the consumer is still feeling gun shy from all the false starts and ups and downs of all the artificial mechanisms such as the stimulus checks for clunckers, first time home buyers, refrigerators etc. While the stimulus package was supposed to help, this writer believes that it has hurt the consumers confidence in terms of seeing a true positive consistent economic recovery. This in fact has not happened. In turn organizations are vary morally and financially to make the commitment to hire people if they too can not see a true positive consistent economic recovery. This country needs the consumer confidence to drive this recovery.

Job Search Tips: Be creative. Continue to "mine" the job marketplace every type of way you can.Find out where the job growth is currently.

Assess if some of these job opportunities are somewhat aligned with your past experience. Can you leverage that background into some of these current growth areas?

If not does it make sense for you to go back to school and get some type of education to help you transition your professional background into one of these growth areas or an area that will broaden your current background in a way that makes professional sense.

Job Search Action Item: Indeed. com has a very nice resource that is worth looking into:

Job Trends

Example: Twitter Job Trends

"Twitter" is the #1 job trend - the fastest growing term over the last year - beating "Cloud Computing" into second place and "iPhone" into third place. The top 10 trends are to the right or you can see the trend for any words or phrases by entering them in the search box above.

Scale: Absolute - Relative
Twitter Job Trends graph

Indeed.com searches millions of jobs from thousands of job sites.
This job trends graph shows the percentage of jobs we find that contain your search terms.

Feel free to share this graph

With this tool you also have the ability to insert other job titles at the top of the page.

Finding a Job and Getting a Job Still Challenging Due to the Consumer

Job Search Market Update: Consumer confidence is up, but the consumer is slow on spending their money. This is holding the labor market back from hiring more. Retail sales in May were down for clothing but up in sporting goods, hobby, electronics (I wonder how much was the  I-PAD) and home appliances. Last month also the biggest decline was seen in the Home Improvement stores. This is most likely the result of the home owner stimulus package ending. I am not sure if the stimulus package has helped us at all, giving a false sense of highs followed by reality. The experts at U of Michigan-Reuters tell us that the consumer "feels"the best they have felt since January 2008, even though they are not spending at the rate everyone one like.

This is holding back the private sector market back, which most people feel will be our engine to a true recovery.

Good news also, China exports are up, US manufacturing sector is still basically expanding

Job Search Tips: Look for possible job openings in the area of IT, Green jobs, sporting goods, hobby, electronics, home appliances, garden, landscaping and the service area. These are possible job ideas based on the subtle trends.

Recovery in manufacturing segment is solid.

Job Market Update: Some feel that the recession ended in June 2009, though some experts are holding off from confirming what some of said relative to this issue.  As the job seekers find work, the median wage will continue to fall. More Americans will be working, but at salaries lower than what they consider adequate. People are happy to find and have jobs right now. Two years from now there will be a lot of people leaving the jobs that they are currently unhappy in.

Job Search Tip Update: Job market is improving in the construction and roofing area where solar panels are involved. Also continue to research the growth of jobs involved with the "green sector". Business that have goods our services that will save energy or be involved in recycling.

Job Search Action Item: Check out some job web sites involved with "Green" jobs.A couple to look into www.greenjobsearch.org, www.thegreenjobbank.com, www.jobs.greenbiz.com, and www.jobs.cleanedge.com

Job Search Mental Health: Field trip time. Visit your local Home Depot, Lowes, Ace or True Value store. Check out the spring/summer seasonal items that are being purchased by the home owners for their seasonal projects. This would include lawn and garden, paint, caulk, walkway lighting, etc. Contact those companies to see if they are hiring. Lastly buy your self 5 bags of mulch and put some of that in your yard. Now go inside and research those companies you found at the store that have the seasonal  products selling now.

That is a wrap.

Largest Job Gain in 3 years!

Happy post Easter Holiday!

Job Market Update: While we saw the largest job gain in 3 years, most of the economists do not expect the new hiring to increase quickly enough this year to rapidly reduce the unemployment rate. Patience is the key.

We saw additional jobs added with private employers (Most since May 2007), increases from manufacturers (3 months straight), increases from health care, leisure and hospitality segments.

Job Tip of the week: Go to your library and find a reference book that will give you 50 new companies with contact names, mailing address, phone, and fax. MAIL or FAX your resume to arrive Tuesday-Thursday. It will get notice more by being mailed, faxed and arriving on the suggested days.

Challenge/Action Item: Call 10 new people a day to follow up with or network on job lead ideas.

Job Search Mental Health Tip: Plant some pansy flowers somewhere outside with someone close to you.

Good luck with your job search progress this week!
