Job Opportunities

Job Search Market Update: Companies that will be assisting BP and the oil cleanup will offer job opportunities that would not have been available if the disaster had not happened.  If the additional deep drilling is allowed, the growth for people with these industry support related skills may be needed to offer backup and additional labor needed for the industry.

Preliminary census data shows that "Many baby boomers and young adults are still in a holding pattern," said Mark Mather Associate Vice President, Population Reference Bureau (non-profit organization). "They are staying close to big cities where most jobs are located, waiting for the economy and housing market to bounce back before they make their next move."

Top 10 cities with the largest  population growth between July 1, 2008 - July 1, 2009 are:

1) Frisco City, CA

2) Cary, NC

3) McKinney, TX

4) New Orleans, LA

5) Alexandria, VA

6) Clarksville, TN

7) Arlington, VA

8) Round Rock, TX

9) Murfreesboro, TN

10) Lewisville, TX

Job Search Tips: Analyze the 10 cities listed above and see if there are any potential job openings for you. Finding a job in these cities should be easier than a city that is not as healthy economically.

Look into job openings for biologists, chemists, project managers, engineers, technicians, laborers, environmental specialists and general clean up workers. Other companies may take a proactive approach and have job openings in these areas in addition to BP. Another company to research in this line of work would be Granite Environmental. They have manufacturing facilities across the US.

Job Search Action Item: In the greater Chicago area this past week-end 500,000 people lost power. I was one of those people. We were without power Friday - Sunday. As I result our normal weekly Monday Audio Tele Class has been rescheduled to this Thursday, June 24, 9am-10am CST. "Secrets to the Job Search for the 45+ Crowd". Click Here to Register/RSVP

Job Search Mental Health Tip: Trying smiling more. Research studies show that people feel happier when they smile. Use this technique to cheer yourself up, pretend you are happy and see how it has the potential to elevate your spirits. I even try to remember to smile while I am driving. When you start looking around it is amazing how many people are driving and walking around with a sour expression on their face.

Also when you smile it will make you appear younger. When you frown you are using more muscles which creates more wrinkles.

Have a great day. Smile and make someone happy!

Persistence is one of the main keys to a successful search.

Finding a Job and Getting a Job Still Challenging Due to the Consumer

Job Search Market Update: Consumer confidence is up, but the consumer is slow on spending their money. This is holding the labor market back from hiring more. Retail sales in May were down for clothing but up in sporting goods, hobby, electronics (I wonder how much was the  I-PAD) and home appliances. Last month also the biggest decline was seen in the Home Improvement stores. This is most likely the result of the home owner stimulus package ending. I am not sure if the stimulus package has helped us at all, giving a false sense of highs followed by reality. The experts at U of Michigan-Reuters tell us that the consumer "feels"the best they have felt since January 2008, even though they are not spending at the rate everyone one like.

This is holding back the private sector market back, which most people feel will be our engine to a true recovery.

Good news also, China exports are up, US manufacturing sector is still basically expanding

Job Search Tips: Look for possible job openings in the area of IT, Green jobs, sporting goods, hobby, electronics, home appliances, garden, landscaping and the service area. These are possible job ideas based on the subtle trends.

Job Search Action Item: Monday, June 14 9am-10am CST, I am hosting a Audio Tele Class, "Powerful Letters That Get Noticed" , click here to register

Looking for More Job Openings?

Job Search Market Update: I would like to say that things have changed this week to the point that there is suddenly an incredible amount of true permanent job openings, but alas I can not say that. Finding a job is still a challenge and best conquered by those that are tough at heart, persistent and tenacious.

Consumers account for 70% of the American economic activity. If they don't have the money, they will not purchase. In the past the consumer has carried us through the previous recessions. They still are not rising up to help this recession the way everyone would like them to. Our houses are no longer the ATM machines we could count on to artificially increase our non existent purchasing power.

Three things saving the economy from being worse are 1)75% of the infamous stimulus package has been spent (if you personally beneifited PLEASE comment. I have yet to meet anyone that has) 2) we are lucky to have near-zero interest rates and 3) anyone that was able to repalce their old car or appliance has been able to help the economy.

Job Search Tips: While the private sector's hiring has been disappointing due to lack of confidence, there is one bright are of hiring in the private sector, there are job opportunities in IT.

Job Market Improving, Unemployed re-enter Job Search Mode

Job Search Market Update: April was the 4th month in a row that the economy added workers, 573,000 jobs added in the first 4 months of this year! There are still more than 15.3 million unemployed last month. In April 290,000 jobs were added; 231,000 of the jobs added were by private employers and 66,000 were temporary jobs for the 2010 Census by the federal government. Employment increased in the professional and business sectors, leisure and hospitality and the manufacturing industry. The Labor Department has issued numbers that tell us 45.9% of all the unemployed people have been without a job for 27 weeks (9 months) or more. This unfortunately is a record high since they started keeping their records.

Job Search Tip: Research and look into job opportunities in leisure, hospitality, manufacturing industries. Look into companies that have seasonal products, services or needs that will become strong in the summer months starting now through fall. There may even be some seasonal jobs that could be temporary now but lead to full time employment once you have the ability to show them what a great employee you are!

Job Search Action Item: Sign up for our next audio Tele Class, Monday May 10, 2010, 9am-10am, CST, 7am-8am PST, "Interview Question Strategies and Tips 101". On this web site go to "Join our Mailing List" and check Registration/RSVP Tele Class May 10th.  Take a field trip to Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, and other outdoor seasonal operations in your area. Look for product and companies you get excited about. Monday go to the library and research those companies in depth. Make a goal of mailing your cover letter and resume to them on Tuesday.

Job Search Mental Health Tip: Take time off from your job search campaign and spend Mother's Day with your mother and some special people in your life. I lost my mother, Margery on June 20, 2007. I think to a certain degree I took Mother's Day for granted. Now on Mother's Day I really miss her. Luckily for me I have a wonderful daughter and son. Hug your own mother for me. You will be surprised how much positive energy you can get from a hug from someone that loves you unconditionally!
