PS It is important during your executive job search that you take time out from working on  your job search and allow your self sometime. 1. Plan to take the whole week-end off spending some special time with loved ones, or helping others. You will find yourself getting recharged. On the Monday you will find yourself with a clearer head of what your professional and personal goals and passions are. You will also find that you have more energy to tackle the daily challenges and the extra little hurdles that life sometimes throws at you. 2. Plan to go to bed before 10PM every night if possible. This is another action that will give you clearer head and a great boost of energy. I learned this tip from Brian Tracy. You need to have a good night's sleep in order to truly be affective. Sometimes we feel that if we keep pushing our selves that extra mile that we will finally get ahead with everything that we have on our plate. What the experts have found is that is indeed a myth, not true. With any level of sleep deprivation and stress, our effectiveness and ability to be successful is diminished. 4 Tools for Uncovering Contact Names

1. You will most likely uncover some contact names through the resources I have mentioned earlier in this chapter.

2. Don't forget to go to each company's website. It always amazes me how much information is available on corporate websites with respect to their executives.

3. Use Social Media to research executives at your target companies. If you do not know the person, then see if one of your connections knows someone within the company.

I still have a strong professional bias toward LinkedIn over Facebook and Twitter. I do not, however, think Facebook and Twitter should be ignored if you are a "free agent." You never know where your next interview will come from.

4. Use the Google or Alexa search tools.

a. At Google.com, go into the Advanced Search

(www.google.com.au/advanced_search).

b. In the top box, enter the company name.

c. In the third box, type the title two levels above your title (your boss's boss's title).

d. Go back to Google's Advanced Search and put the first and last names of the person you've uncovered on the first line.

e. Put the company's name on the third line.

f. Run the search.

g. This strategy will give you some background information on your target contact.

These are some starter ideas on how to approach your target companies and organizations. If you are currently frustrated with the results so far in your job search, then now may be the time to start with a fresh slate.

You may have been doing all of this when you first started your search, but perhaps you have fallen off the wagon and gotten less disciplined over time. I know that one of the secret keys to a successful job search is a combination of a strong sense of discipline and persistence.

Take a second look at your search. Re-evaluate your target companies. Maybe there are some ways you could and should expand your list by widening your net.

7 Steps for Job Search Internet Success

1. If at all possible, create an email account that uses a

professional-sounding name and is not tied into your

work environment. I suggest using your first name and

Last name, such as eleanorsweet@email.com or eleanor

.sweet@email.com.

2. If there are specific directions regarding the mechanics

on how to apply to the jobs you’re interested in, follow

them exactly per their request. This is not the time to be

a rebel and appear difficult. The hiring authority will not

be interested in you as a candidate if you do not seem as

though you have the ability to follow simple instructions.

If the job description does not specify whether to

send your resume as an attachment or in the body of the

email, then you should do both. If the employer asks for

your resume to be placed in the body of your email, then

do a “cut and paste” and put your resume in the body of

the message. At the end of your message, you can always

tell them that you have a professional, fully formatted

hardcopy version available upon request.

If the hiring authority is asking for a PDF fi le and you

need a free converter, go to www.cutepdfwriter.com and

download the software.

To convert your document, you will go to “print” and

save it from your printer menu under “Cutepdfwriter.”

When you highlight and hit enter, the document is then

converted into a PDF fi le.

3. When you save your resume, save it on your hard drive

with your fi rst and last name as part of the document

name (e.g., PattySmithResume.doc or SmithPattyResume

.pdf). Such a naming convention will make it easier for

the person receiving it to keep track of it and find it

later.

4. In the subject line of the email, be short and specific to

make things easier for the hiring authority (e.g., Product

Manager: Rick Stevens).

5. If possible, create an email signature that includes your

contact information such as name, email address, and

phone number.

To create a signature fi le in Microsoft Outlook, go to

Tools, Options, and then Mail Formats. The information

you place there will then automatically be put into the

body of all your emails.

6. Double check that you are sending your resume to the

correct person. Perform a spell check and make sure

your computer “address book” did not inadvertently pick

another person whose name is close in the alphabet.

7. Make sure you’re not using a spam blocker, thereby creating

problems for the person to whom you are sending

your resume.
