Dear Eleanor, This week's Job Search Tips: Job Search Success Strategies: Great Job Search Internet Websites       Gateways and Portals You Need to Be Aware Of When you're beginning your job search research, I suggest you visit some of the main gateways, or what I call "portals," for your job search information. This is by far the fastest way to find good general information for your job search needs. Remember to stay focused and on task regarding the informational answers you are seeking. Here are some of my go-to career-hunting sites: 1. www.job-hunt.org (large but overwhelming) 2. www.jobhuntersbible.com (Mark and Richard Bolles) 3. www.rileyguide.com (Margaret Riley Dikel) 4. www.careeronestop.org (U.S. Department of Labor) 5. www.careerjournal.com (Wall Street Journal executive website) 6. www.quintcareers.com (lightly touches upon a lot of topics) 7. www.jobstar.org (California based and oriented) 8. www.cacareerzone.org (California oriented-provides a choice of viewing the site via text, graphic, or Flash mode) This is an excerpt from my recently released book, The NEW Rules of Job Search - How to Land an Executive Job in the New Economy, page 91. Sweet Job Tips: In your Executive Search Save Time With Your Emails

Dear Eleanor, This week's Job Search Tips: Job Search Success Strategies Saving Time With Your Emails      1.To start, create folders over in your navigation bar where you want to file emails worth saving. When creating each new folder, make sure you are always at the top of the navigation bar. That way, folders will be alphabetized and will not inadvertently become a subfolder of something non-related. Like all correspondence, when contending with email, deal with it only once. If you can take care of it in two minutes, do so. The experts say that you should be able to tackle one-third of your email this way. 2. Now create four more folders in your navigation bar: *ACTION*, *WAITING FOR*, *READ/REVIEW*, and *PRINT*. 3. Specific to your job search, you can also label four more files: *JSACTIVE *, *JSWORKING ON*, *JSWAITING ON*, and *JS ANSWERS*. Note that when you use the asterisk before these folders' names, they will be alphabetized at the top of the folder list. 4. I suggest you BCC (blind carbon copy) yourself on all emails related to your job search. Either that or remember to forward them to yourself from your Send folder. When they reach your inbox, file them in the appropriate folder. You can also create a special folder for companies with which you have conducted a lot of activity. 5. Check all of these aforementioned folders I have suggested periodically to see if any of the items can be deleted. To make this whole process easier, make sure you're a good typist. If you are a slow typist, go to a community college and take a course. You want to be able to type at least 50 words a minute. This ability will save you a lot of time. Chapter 7 - Target Companies (pages 117-118) 

4 Tools for Uncovering Contact Names

1. You will most likely uncover some contact names through the resources I have mentioned earlier in this chapter.

2. Don't forget to go to each company's website. It always amazes me how much information is available on corporate websites with respect to their executives.

3. Use Social Media to research executives at your target companies. If you do not know the person, then see if one of your connections knows someone within the company.

I still have a strong professional bias toward LinkedIn over Facebook and Twitter. I do not, however, think Facebook and Twitter should be ignored if you are a "free agent." You never know where your next interview will come from.

4. Use the Google or Alexa search tools.

a. At Google.com, go into the Advanced Search

(www.google.com.au/advanced_search).

b. In the top box, enter the company name.

c. In the third box, type the title two levels above your title (your boss's boss's title).

d. Go back to Google's Advanced Search and put the first and last names of the person you've uncovered on the first line.

e. Put the company's name on the third line.

f. Run the search.

g. This strategy will give you some background information on your target contact.

These are some starter ideas on how to approach your target companies and organizations. If you are currently frustrated with the results so far in your job search, then now may be the time to start with a fresh slate.

You may have been doing all of this when you first started your search, but perhaps you have fallen off the wagon and gotten less disciplined over time. I know that one of the secret keys to a successful job search is a combination of a strong sense of discipline and persistence.

Take a second look at your search. Re-evaluate your target companies. Maybe there are some ways you could and should expand your list by widening your net.

As we start this new year of 2012, I wanted to share the topic of Goal Setting.  I wanted to touch on the importance of goal setting. I have always had goals in mind both personally and professionally. It has not really been since the last two years that I have started to use written daily goals. What a difference it makes. It keeps you so focused and helps re-enforce the commitment moving toward your goal. If you verbalize and make a public declaration, it also drives your internal engine and energy more firmly toward the goal.
