Sweet Job Tips: Executive Job Search Marketing Yourself Tools

This week's Job Search Tips:

In Your Executive Search Remember to Maintain a Solid Proffessional Image

Job Search Success Strategies

Chapter 10 - Art of Marketing Yourself

During Your Job Search

In defining personal branding, Peters tells us to "create a

message and strategy to promote the brand called You." To

accomplish this task, ask yourself:

  1. "What is it about me that makes me different from the other job seekers?" See if you can come up with an explanation that is 15 words or fewer.
  2. What is my greatest  and clearest strength?
  3. "What is my most noteworthy personal trait?"

This is the old feature/benefit interplay at work here. What

is a feature you possess that will have the most benefit for the

employer?

Peters also says to ask yourself:

  1. "What do I do that adds remarkable, measurable, distinguished, and distinctive value?"
  1. "What do I do that I am most proud of?"
  2. "What have I accomplished that I can unabashedly brag about?"

This is an expert from my book, The NEW Rules of Job Search - How to Land an Executive Job in the New Economy, page 161-162.

At the end of this chapter in my book, I share with you three great resources that you should try this week to refresh your job search. Follow the links listed below.

Sweet Job Tips: Executive Job Search Tool for Your Job Search

Eleanor Anne Sweet - The Executive Job Search ExpertToday I want to share with you the a secret weapon for your job search, the Broadcast Letter.

Secret Weapon—Broadcast Letter

Now I would like to switch gears to talk about the broadcast letter.

This is a job search technique I’m a keen believer in. In fact,

a broadcast letter is how I got my marketing job with Salton. I

had recently moved to Chicago because of my marriage, having

previously been with GE Lighting. I wanted to transition from

national accounts manager to marketing. As is to be expected,

it’s hard to make a career transition to a different area where

you have no proven track record. This is true, even though you

think you can make the transition.

The broadcast letter is particularly effective for:

1. People who have had multiple job changes (fewer than

two years per job)

2. People who are 45+ years old

3. People who are considering a career change in terms of

either industry, product category, or primary professional

expertise (such as myself in the aforementioned example).

A broadcast letter is a hybrid between a cover letter and a

resume. Unlike a resume, however, which is more about a call

of action, a broadcast letter is more about branding.

In situations like those mentioned above, instead of sending

a resume, you send your broadcast letter. The good thing about

broadcast letters is that they can generate leads for you. That’s

because all companies have problems that need to be solved.

It’s all a matter of chance as to whether it’s the right time for

someone with your type of background.

Address your broadcast letter to the president of the company

you’re targeting. By sending it to the top brass, your letter gets

passed down to someone else and is less likely to be thrown away.

That’s because it’s being routed from the president’s office and therefore

automatically deemed as important. Your letter will be more

visible for two reasons: 1) it originated in the president’s office and

2) you mailed a hard copy through the good old-fashioned mail.

Sweet Job TIps: Michael Jordan Success Tips to Apply to Your Executive Job Search

Executive Job Search Expert - Eleanor Anne SweetThis month I wanted to share with you one of my favorite athletes, Michael Jordan.I moved to Chicago in 1984, in the middle of the Michael Jordan frenzy. It was a very exciting period for Chicago.

Michael Jordan is a former American professional basketball player, active businessman, and majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, National Basketball Association (NBA) team.

Jordan was extremely instrumental in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.

His biography on the NBA website states, "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time."

It takes a very special person to become the greatest basketball player of all time. I want to share with you 10 success lessons from Michael Jordan.

Michael Jordan

10 Success Lessons

1. Make It Happen

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen."

2. Passion

"Even when I'm old and grey, I won't be able to play it, but I'll still love the game."

3. Try

"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying."

4. Work

"I'm not out there sweating for three hours every day just to find out what it feels like to sweat."

5. Fail

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

6. Go Around

"If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."

7. The Mind

"My body could stand the crutches but my mind couldn't stand the sideline."

8. Perspective

"Always turn a negative situation into a positive situation."

9. Loyalty and Responsibility

"The game is my life. It demands loyalty and responsibility, and it gives me back fulfillment and peace."

10. Expectations

"You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them."

Sweet Job Tips: Executive Search Networking with LinkedIn

Executive Job Search Tips6 Tips on How to Use LinkedIn for Job Search Networking

1. You can use LinkedIn’s search tools to find executives who

are in your target companies. In the search bar, choose the

“Companies” option and enter the name of the company

you’re interested in contacting. Under the industry section,

pick “Any Industry” or the specific one you prefer. You

will then be presented with a list of LinkedIn members

who work for that company.

2. Go to the “Companies” tab and try this technique. Select

“Browse All Industries” and select your industry. Look

at every profile that interests you. When you have the

profiles open, look at which “Groups and Associations”

they have listed. This is another area to look for in your networking endeavors.

If it makes sense, join the same group.

3. Consider joining Toplinked at www.toplinked.com. You

should be able to link to its members. This group is made

up of “open networkers” in LinkedIn who should be fairly

amenable to accepting your invitation.

4. Make sure you are working on getting LinkedIn recommendations

from your past supervisors, customers, peers, etc.

5. Don’t forget to look at the “Applications” link on your

LinkedIn home page. Check out which applications you

would like to add to your account.

6. Consider adding the “Polls” function, which allows you

to send a poll about your job search to your list. You will

need to have 150 contacts in order to be able to use this

product, but you will be able to reach everyone faster than

by emailing or phoning them.

There are various products out there that will coordinate

and connect all your Social Networking sites for you. Linking

them all together will save you time. That’s because everything

will be updated at the same time. Not only is it a competitive

market out there, but it’s also constantly changing technologically.

That being the case, anything you can do to simplify the

process is beneficial.

Have a great week. Let me know how I can help you improve your exeutive job search results.
