Finding a Job and Getting a Job Still Challenging Due to the Consumer

Job Search Market Update: Consumer confidence is up, but the consumer is slow on spending their money. This is holding the labor market back from hiring more. Retail sales in May were down for clothing but up in sporting goods, hobby, electronics (I wonder how much was the  I-PAD) and home appliances. Last month also the biggest decline was seen in the Home Improvement stores. This is most likely the result of the home owner stimulus package ending. I am not sure if the stimulus package has helped us at all, giving a false sense of highs followed by reality. The experts at U of Michigan-Reuters tell us that the consumer "feels"the best they have felt since January 2008, even though they are not spending at the rate everyone one like.

This is holding back the private sector market back, which most people feel will be our engine to a true recovery.

Good news also, China exports are up, US manufacturing sector is still basically expanding

Job Search Tips: Look for possible job openings in the area of IT, Green jobs, sporting goods, hobby, electronics, home appliances, garden, landscaping and the service area. These are possible job ideas based on the subtle trends.

Consumer Confidence Rising, Durable Goods Order Rising, Labor Market Should Be Next

Job Search Market Update: The rise of both consumer confidence and durable goods orders are signs that the forces of the recovery are warming up. It is still unknown how long it will take for it to create a "hot" job market. Take note that at least signs are going in the right direction and "heating up". Currently consumer spending is 70% of the GDP, 90% would represent a healthy economy.

Durable goods orders are showing the best numbers in the 3 months and double the projections! The US economy has been growing since last summer. The country is emerging from the worst recession since the 1930's. Experts are predicting tomorrow that the new GDP number will be 3.4 %, up from the first 3 months of this year of 3.2%

Job Search Market: In finding a job continue to divide your job search in terms 1) job board and help wanted ads (5-10% find success) and 2) hidden job market (80% people find their job this way). As a rule, today people spend too much time answering the job boards that represent only a potential success rate of 10%, more effort should be shifted to cold calling and networking into the hidden job market.

Largest Job Gain in 3 years!

Happy post Easter Holiday!

Job Market Update: While we saw the largest job gain in 3 years, most of the economists do not expect the new hiring to increase quickly enough this year to rapidly reduce the unemployment rate. Patience is the key.

We saw additional jobs added with private employers (Most since May 2007), increases from manufacturers (3 months straight), increases from health care, leisure and hospitality segments.

Job Tip of the week: Go to your library and find a reference book that will give you 50 new companies with contact names, mailing address, phone, and fax. MAIL or FAX your resume to arrive Tuesday-Thursday. It will get notice more by being mailed, faxed and arriving on the suggested days.

Challenge/Action Item: Call 10 new people a day to follow up with or network on job lead ideas.

Job Search Mental Health Tip: Plant some pansy flowers somewhere outside with someone close to you.

Good luck with your job search progress this week!

Job market update coming up this Friday.

Job Market update: The numbers today were slightly better than expected due to the government hired census employees and the employees hired with the change in weather, allowing for more outside workers. These factor caused the unemployment numbers to come in slightly higher than projected.

There still continue in some areas to be layoffs.

Still over all we feel the labor market is gently trying to come back. We are predicting a low recovery for the next 12- 18 months minimum. We can still expect to see the 10% unemployment through the end of the year.

Job Tip of the day: Have someone new look at your resume today and re-evaluate how it reads. Maybe it is time to try a slightly modified version.

Challenge/Action Item: 1) Re-send your recently updated resume to your favorite companies on your hot list. 2) Visit Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, True Value store and research seasonal lawn and and garden products. Get the company web site or address from the back of the product. Contact those companies to see if they are hiring.

Mental Health tip of the day: Go outside and enjoy the nice weather and sun for 20 minutes. Then get back to working on your job search.

That's a wrap for the day.

Good luck with your job search progress today!
