Sweet Job Tips: 5 Business Secrets from Coach Don Shula for your executive job

Sweet Success Leader:

5 Business Secrets from Don Shula
Dear Fellow Housewares Industry Executive,

This month's leader is Coach Don Shula.

Coach Don Shula gives five business secrets for high-performance coaching in his book with Ken Blanchard, where the two authors parallel successful strategies on the football field to those in the workplace. The book is entitled Everyone's a Coach: Five Business Secrets for High-Performance Coaching (1995).

Secret #1: Conviction Driven  "The problem with most leaders today is they don't stand for anything. Leadership implies movement toward something, and convictions provide that direction. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."

Secret #2 Over learning  "I want our players to be so familiar with their assignments that when the game starts, they don't have to worry about what they're supposed to be doing. They can simply turn themselves loose physically to do whatever it takes to win the game."

Secret #3: Audible-Ready  "Preparation means everything to me. I'm passionate about my players being ready for anything. Now, part of being ready is being able to shift your game plan when necessary."

Secret #4: Consistency  "One thing I never want to be accused of is not noticing."

Secret #5: Honesty-Based  "While I have gained recognition for my success as a coach, I am proudest when I am recognized for my integrity, an intangible that can't be measured by a win-loss record."

Sweet Job Tips: Hidden Jobs Executive Job Search Networking

 This week's Job Search Tips:

Networking for Hidden Jobs

As we previously discussed, the networking portion of your job search campaign should consist of contacting 25 to 30 people daily. Relative to your target companies, on a daily basis, you should be working on networking with your to 25 to 50 "A" companies and 50 to 75 "B" companies.

From your list of networking contacts and target companies, select those that are in your industry (or an aligned industry) and that are located within a realistic geographical area (i.e., one that is close enough to drive to and get a face-to-face meeting with the hiring authority).

Now pick the first 10 contacts/companies on that list and conduct enough initial research into them to confirm in your mind that at this time, with the limited information at your disposal, it makes sense for you to take things to the next level.

This is an excerpt from my book, The NEW Rules of Job Search  - How to Land an Executive Job in the New Economy, Chapter 9, Page 141 - 142.

I look forward to helping you land that next great job you are looking for in 2013!

Take care,
Eleanor

Dear Eleanor,

This week's Job Search Tips:

Job Search Success Strategies:

Great Job Search Internet Websites

Gateways and Portals You Need to Be Aware Of

When you're beginning your job search research, I suggest you visit some of the main gateways, or what I call "portals," for your job search information.

This is by far the fastest way to find good general information for your job search needs. Remember to stay focused and on task regarding the informational answers you are seeking.

Here are some of my go-to career-hunting sites:

1. www.job-hunt.org (large but overwhelming)

2. www.jobhuntersbible.com (Mark and Richard Bolles)

3. www.rileyguide.com (Margaret Riley Dikel)

4. www.careeronestop.org (U.S. Department of Labor)

5. www.careerjournal.com (Wall Street Journal executive website)

6. www.quintcareers.com (lightly touches upon a lot of topics)

7. www.jobstar.org (California based and oriented)

8. www.cacareerzone.org (California oriented-provides a choice of viewing the site via text, graphic, or Flash mode)

This is an excerpt from my recently released book, The NEW Rules of Job Search - How to Land an Executive Job in the New Economy, page 91.

I suggest you print this week's newsletter for this information above to make it easier to use.

I look forward to helping you land that next great job you are looking for in 2013!
